To execute any given task a crew-member must be proficient in many technical skills. Examples are navigating through a narrow sea lane or landing an airplane in adverse weather conditions. In addition, team-skills and team-behavior greatly influence crew-performance. The Crew Resource Management (CRM)-Training is aimed at these so called ‘non-technical’-skills. The goal of CRM is to improve safety and mission effectiveness of operations teams through behavior modifications of crew members. CRM-training is known to be beneficial in the maritime and aeronautical environment, but also for emergency-response and medical teams. The underlying theoretical basis of the training consists of seven CRM-Skills: - Decision Making - Adaptability/Flexibility - Mission Analysis - Communication - Leadership - Assertiveness - Situational Awareness In addition, the course-curriculum can be extended with the topics ‘Teamwork’, ‘Threat and Error Management’ and ‘Workload Management’. The CRM-training is conducted by a designated CRM-instructor and is based on a presentation, which serves as starting point for group interaction and discussion. Also a Case Study is included. The Case Study can be submitted by the CRM-instructor but preferably the group brings a relevant case-study to the training to integrate the CRM-skills in their specific operational environment. The duration of the training may vary from a 1-day introduction workshop up to a full 5-day course. Depending on the length of the training Course members have gained insights in (human) factors determining crew performance, are able to identify hazards and manage associated risks. To fully benefit from the CRM-training it is recommended organizations incorporate CRM in a company-wide safety-program. We are available to assist in developing such a program. |
